Of all the trees planted for their decorative appeal, few are more beautiful than the princess tree. Indeed, in its native China it has been revered for centuries, and not just for its beauty: its leaves and flowers are reported to stop skin from wrinkling and hair from turning grey!
Another ancient Chinese custom involves planting a princess tree when a baby girl is born. Because the tree is particularly fast-growing, it matures as the girl does, eventually being cut down when she is ready to marry. The timber of the tree, which is light and easily worked, was then carved into various articles for her dowry. Paulownia tomentosa is an impressive tree: its leaves can easily grow to more than 30cm in both length and width. In the wild, this deciduous tree can grow to 15m (50ft) in height but generally only reaches around half that height in colder areas.
Flowers of the princess tree are truly spectacular. The flower buds begin to form on the stem in the autumn and develop over winter before opening the following May before the leaves emerge. The flowers are a rich purple colour and shaped like the flowers of the foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) from which it takes one of its common names. The flowers appear in clusters which can be anything up to 30cm in length.
The fruit of the tree comes in the form of green seed pods. These are an elongated egg-shape with a pointed tip and contain many winged seeds.
